Barilla Restaurant Social Wall

Phygital Design/UX/UI Design

It is the first case in the world in the restaurant retail sector: consumers will be able to read the comments on TripAdvisor directly on the window of the new Barilla restaurant in Herald Square, in the heart of Manhattan. A major shift towards maximum transparency in the way Barilla communicates with customers, supported in this digital transformation process by Microsoft and its technology partners.

The novelty was presented in New York, in the third Barilla Restaurant recently opened in Manhattan. A real cultural and technological revolution that transforms the way of communicating: the restaurant window becomes an interactive screen, in which to display your dishes and receive reviews and consumer posts that arrive in real time from Tripadvisor.

Gamification

Gamification is adding game mechanics into nongame environments, like a website, online community, learning management system or business’ intranet to increase participation. The goal of gamification is to engage with consumers, employees and partners to inspire collaborate, share and interact.

What is Phygital?

Phygital is the concept of using technology to bridge the digital world with the physical world with the purpose of providing a unique interactive experiences for the user. The phygital phenomenon distinguishes itself from other marketing tactics with its multichannel focus where the consumer’s purchasing process is fluid and familiar. This is exactly what we used to attract new customers and give to the existing ones another motive to remain the fun of Barilla brand.

Thank to the Microsoft Kinect sensor that registers movement in front of the window, the passersby can interact with the menù and social pages on the screen  without touching it.  Thanks to the Microsoft Azure cloud, obtained data is used to modify or adjust the offer according to the client needs.

User Experience

With simple, natural gestures (NUI – Natural User Interface) user interacts with the ”screen”. Moving the hand up and down permits to user to see TripAdvisor comments or check out the menù.  After the big success of Interactive menù, Barilla Restaurants presented another phygital project. Scratch-n-Win is touchless game in which user just by using the body ”removes” the objects from the screen (in this case pasta)  in order to reach the prize (coupon or similar).
